Pottery of Rangmahal Culture
The historic site of Rangmahal is
situated in the Suratgarh Tehsil
of Sriganganagar district of Rajasthan in India. The early historical site at
Rangmahal was excavated by a team of Swedish Archaeologists in the year 1952-
54. The first settlement was laid down around 250 A.D. during Kushana period.
The site is also famous for the manufacturing of a distinct type of ceramic
industry known as Rangmahal ware. The potteries of Rangmahal Culture are wheel
made and the colour appears reddish or pinkish. The decoration made on the
surface of the pottery are incised, applied and paintings.
The evidences of Red Polished Ware are
found from Rangmahal. Varieties of pottery shards are found in abundance.
Virtually identical shapes are discovered from Rangmahal. The vessel shapes at
Rangmahal ranging from knife edge, small bowls with straight side to small
bowls with simple in- turned rims are discovered. Red Polished Ware is also
known as pottery of the early historic period. Red Polished Ware is also found
in association with other red wares. The shapes of Rangmahal pottery are
Globular pot with interior beaded ledge, Spouted vessels, Sprinklers, etc. The pottery shards are found in very
fragmentary condition which consists of rim, neck and base.
